From Conflict to Peace Building:

The Power of Early Childhood Initiatives

Lessons from Around the World

Paul Connolly and Jacqueline Hayden with Diane Levin

This books contains stories of hope and encouragement and of just what early childhood practitioners can do and achieve in the face of adversity. From Conflict to Peace Building shows us that it is possible to make a real difference to the lives of children and families in societies affected by conflict. Moreover, the stories illustrate the power of the early years sector not only as foundation stone upon which to re-build communities but also as a vehicle for peace building  because of its ability to reach across political divides and to encourage the differing side in conflict to develop alternative visions of the future based around the needs of children.

This is the first publication of the International Working Group on Peace Building with Young Children. Further information on the Group can be found at:

School Readiness and Social-Emotional Development

Perspectives on Cultural Diversity

Edited by Barbara Bowman and Evelyn K. Moore

Strong social-emotional development underlies all later social, emotional, and academic success.” However, among the 20 to 50 percent of children who enter kindergarten not ready to learn, social-emotional development is often where they are least prepared. This collection of seven commissioned papers summarizes a study by the National Black Child Development Institute of the current state of research and programs addressing preschoolers' social-emotional development. This publication is composed of findings from early childhood scholars and experts representing various cultural groups.

It identifies practical tools and strategies, as well as research, mental health screening, and community partnership models, that readers can use as resources for new research and program development
